Keyword Selection

To successfully gain search engine placement for your website you will need to decide how you want your potential clients/customers to find your website.

Target the wrong keywords and all your efforts will be in vain. Choose the right keywords, and you will see your website traffic skyrocket. Decide which keywords people are likely to use to find you. If you want to attract visitors to your website through search engines the most relevant and effective keywords should be prominent in the home page and in top level pages.

When selecting keywords, try to put yourself in the place of someone who is searching for your product or service. Make a list of your keywords, then do some searching in a few search engines using them in different keyword phrase combinations.

After you have done your research, make a list of the best keywords for your website, putting the best ones at the top of the list. Later, you will optimize the home page with one or two of the top keyword phrases. If you have more than a couple, you can optimize other pages with them.

When creating your website design, CyberComDesigns will use your selected keywords in naming image files, alt text, page names, etc.

Selecting the proper keywords is your first step. Choose keywords that describe the product or service you offer. Suppose your business is selling Garden Supplies. You would choose relevant keywords.
Obviously "Garden Supplies" would be one, "Garden Materials" may be another. Don't forget that your potential customer may enter "Backyard Supplies" or "Home Gardening" into a search engine instead of "Garden Supplies".

If you specialize in a specific area then choose keywords that describe that. Using our previous example of Garden Supplies, you may specialize in selling compost or topsoil. If that was the case you would likely choose keywords such as "Garden Soil" or "Backyard Compost". You want to choose keywords that your potential customers would enter into a search engine to find what you offer. What would you enter into a search engine to find the product or service you offer.

Don't worry about there not being enough top 10 slots where you can achieve a high search engine ranking. True, there are some keywords that are very competitive. If it appears unlikely that you will get in a top 10 spot using your top keyword or phrase, be creative! There are usually other keywords and keyword combinations where you can achieve a Top 10 ranking. For example, if you can't achieve a good ranking on "Garden Supplies," target "Botanical Supplies". You may find that there are more people searching for these other phrases than were searching for the first phrase you thought of. In marketing, this is called carving out your niche. If you're Microsoft, you can afford to fight over who has the best "Browser Software." But, for the rest of us, we know we can't always fight the big boys. So instead, what savvy marketers do is to identify a "niche" that few others are targeting and go after it.

There are many tools on the internet that you can use to help you select the proper keywords to use in your website content. A good tool for finding and ranking your keyword phrases is the Overture.com Search Term Suggestion Tool. With this handy tool, you can enter a primary keyword, such as "web" and view a list of keyword phrases, such as "website design" or "website development", that were actually used by searchers. It also lists the number of requests for each keyword phrase.
Google also offers a valuable keyword selection tool which you will also find just as useful.

Niche Marketing

The market for your product or service may be widely available through many different companies. Often it is best to use "Niche Marketing" to promote your business. That is to say that the product/service is promoted by mainstream suppliers. You may want to focus on marketing your website using keywords that are directed toward clients that are searching for a unique product or service that you offer. For instance, "Organic Gardening Supplies".
